This is going to be a bare-bones edition of the newsletter. Marshall’s prepping to move to New York City next week, so there wasn’t as much time to build out this week’s edition.
Two things:
1) Hit us up if you live in NYC. Marshall’s obviously going to live there, but Saagar’s going to make it up a decent amount starting next month.
2) Pay special attention to next week’s newsletter, which we will now send out on Thursdays. There’ll be multiple announcements about how we’re going to continue stepping up the show.
Welcome Back to The Realignment
We released two episodes this week: Glenn Greenwald on his new book about democracy and freedom of the press in Brazil; and Frank DiStefano on the history of America’s political realignments.
Seeing as the episode with Frank literally covers everything this show’s about and more, we’ll be back next week with a bit more in-depth focus.
Episode 115: Frank DiStefano: The Next Realignment and Why America’s Parties Are Crumbling + Extended Q&A
Note:
1) Frank’s book The Next Realignment: Why America’s Parties Are Crumbling and What Happens Next isn’t available on Bookshop right now, so for once, we’re going to refer you to Amazon to pick up your copy. An absolute must-read.
2) Frank also has an awesome YouTube channel focused on realignments and American history. Check it out and subscribe. Saagar’s been plowing through his videos this morning. We’re looking forward to having him back on the show.
Episode 114: Glenn Greenwald: Securing Democracy and Lessons from Bolsonaro’s Brazil
Next Week’s Shows: Lisa Napoli 4/13 & Elliot Ackerman 4/15
Next week, we’re bringing back Lisa Napoli to discuss media and internet history, plus her new book on the history of NPR (which Marshall and Saagar grew up on): Susan, Linda, Nina & Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR. Plus, Lisa’s book Up All Night: Ted Turner, CNN, and the Birth of 24-Hour News is out in paperback next month, which she previously promoted on The Realignment last December.
Thursday’s episode will feature Elliot Ackerman for Part II of our conversation about 2034: A Novel of the Next World War. Elliot co-wrote the novel with Admiral Stavridis, so we’re looking forward to building on our first conversation.
The Realignment Bookshop
As a reminder, we’ve created a Realignment podcast affiliate shop for guest books at bookshop.org. The shop features our guests’ books, including books from Michael Lind, Scott Galloway, Reeves Wiedeman, Ross Douthat, Matt Stoller, and Lisa Napoli.
We’ve built out three Bookshop lists:
1) Our list of the best books we read in 2020
2) All of the books we’ve read so far in 2021
3) Books written by Realignment podcast guests
If you purchase a book using our link, we get a 10% commission, a local bookseller gets supported, and you get an awesome book! Watch this space for new uploads and future lists by topic.
Let us know what you think about this or any other week’s episodes. Please share The Realignment with anyone who’d enjoy the podcast.
