Welcome Back to The Realignment
Hey everyone, we took last week off for the 4th of July holiday weekend and are sending this a day late. If you live and breathe by getting your Realignment email by 5:30 at the latest on Thursdays, please accept our humblest apologies. We’re back to our normal publishing schedule next week.
The Realignment Conference
The number one thing everyone should check out is more information on The Realignment’s first conference that we’re hosting in Miami on October 22nd.
We’re recording five live panels/fireside chats and hosting a reception afterward. We can fit around 75 people.
Episodes of the Week
Episode 140: Antonio Garcia Martinez: America’s Thirty Years’ War
Antonio recently relaunched his Substack, The Pull Request, and if you’re looking to support an excellent, independent writer, he should be at the top of your list. Subscribe here.
Also, check out three of his best pieces here:
The Bus Says Belen The Pull Request 6/30/2021
Interview: The Man Who Software Ate the World The Pull Request 6/25/2021
Latinx-plaining the Election The Pull Request 11/12/2020
Episode 139: George Packer: How America Fractured and the Way Forward
Read an excerpt of George Packer’s book at The Atlantic.
You can purchase George Packer’s three most recent books at our Bookshop storefront: The Last Best Hope: America in Crisis and Renewal, Our Man: Richard Hoolbroke and the End of the American Century, and The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America. We can’t recommend these books enough. If we were put together a Realignment top-ten list, The Unwinding would easily make the top-five.
The Deep End Podcast
Last month, Marshall launched a new podcast through On Deck. Three recent episodes are going to be right up Realignment listener’s alleys:
Ecommerce and the Vanishing Middle with Web Smith
The Future of Cities with Bradley Tusk (Bradley’s firm managed Andrew Yang’s NYC mayoral campaign)
Cracking Longevity with Celine Halioua
Think of The Deep End as The Realignment but focused on understanding one specific topic in the business/tech/startup space. Definitely reach out if you’d like to learn more about On Deck.
YouTube
As you can see, The Realignment’s YouTube channel’s really, really close to getting 50,000 subscribers. It’d be a huge help if you all would go subscribe!
We premiere each episode around 9:00 AM EST on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the live chat is getting better and better each week.
We’ve always treated the YouTube channel as a side-hustle, but thanks to Breaking Points, we’ve picked up enough subscribers that we’re going to step things up.
The most obvious fix is that we need to fix our title cards. Any suggestions?
The Realignment on the Breaking Points YouTube channel
As we discussed during the Breaking Points/Krystal Kyle and Friends/The Realignment crossover episode, Saagar couldn’t mention The Realignment on Rising.
So it’s really cool that we can now share clips from The Realignment on their main channel. Marshall can’t speak for Saagar on this, but there’s obviously a long-term opportunity to build Breaking Points into a huge hub for independent media.
The Realignment Bookshop
As a reminder, we’ve created a Realignment Bookshop affiliate store showcasing books by guests, what we’re actively reading this year and deeper dives into the featured topic of an episode.
Most importantly, you don’t need to go with our recommendations if you want to support the show. If you go to Bookshop.org through our link and then purchase *anything* we still get your support.
If you purchase a book using our link, the show gets a 10% commission, a local, independent booksellers gets support, and you get an awesome book!
Here are two lists we’ve built out:
1) Books by Realignment Guests
2) Books we’ve read/listened to in 2021
Also, a related thank you. Conor Dougherty from our episode on the housing crisis reached out to Marshall and said that Realignment listeners purchased a more than a sizeable number of books. He does a lot of podcasts and events, but The Realignment was one of the most impactful he’s ever done. Huge thanks, everyone.
Let us know what you think about this or any other week’s episodes. Please share The Realignment with anyone who’d enjoy the podcast.
