Marc's list is interesting I guess. One book he left out that I strongly suggest anyone interested in US politics w/ a historical perspective is Frank DiStefano's 'Realignment'. It's a fantastic book, and I discovered him thru your podcast.
It's an extremely well written look at how US politics has continuously renewed itself since the founding (when, to my surprise I learned that the founders didn't want to see political parties emerge) up to the current polarity.
